TIPS OF GETTING MOST OF IT FROM MEDICAL COLLEGE EXAM PREPARATION

Visit on Youtube

Here are some of the tips that is based on my personal experience while I was preparing for my final year MBBS examinations. I hope you find it useful.

1. Follow the syllabus

Medicine is an ocean. You cannot study everything. It’s a fact. You have to be jack of all. Don’t leave any topic even if its not high yield for exams. Make a schedule categorizing all the topics and the day you will study them. It will help you as at the end of the day you will know whether you finished for the day or not. Also you will know your speed and reschedule your study plan.

Make a list of topics you are studying that day and cross-check it before you go to sleep.

2. Start from the basics

When you look at the syllabus, its too much and you are lost on where to start. Starting from big topic will only make you feel that you cannot complete the syllabus. Take a small topic or the topic that you know a bit or have some confidence about it. Complete it and feel confident. It will give you a good feeling and you will be willing to start new chapter then. Once you complete few chapters, you will get into flow and the preparation will be smoother thereafter.

3. Group Discussion

If you ask me what is one thing that helps you to cover more topics in less time, it will always be group discussion. I used to be a lone learner until my final year. Then I made a group of 3 4 friends . We used to sit on a table in library and studied similar topics and when we had any confusion in any topic, we used to discuss on it. It will give you a sense of break from your study but you will be learning at the same time. It made our study fun and more memorable.

4. Consistency

There will be times when bizarre thoughts will come. You will feel that you are too slow on your study and that you have been forgetting whatever you read and you don’t fell like studying anything. You will feel sleepy after only few minutes. And it is frustrating. Trust me it happens to everyone.  No one is GOD. We are all the same. And if we have done it, you can also do it. Someone is a bit smarter and hard working, important thing is you don’t give up. Study everyday according the routine you made. Take enough breaks. I use to take multiple breaks. Grab a cup of coffee if you re sleepy. Drink water. Just don’t give up.

5. Revision is the key

If you feel like you are forgetting stuffs or you are not confident on your topics, you should know that you are lacking revision. There are several methods for it. One being  spaced repetition. After you study a topic reschedule it after few days to revise the same. Also there are some topics which you will forget everytime you read it like dosage of some emergency drugs. For example,  how will you manage hyperkalemia? You may remember the name of drugs but not the dose and in few days, you will even forget the drugs. So I used an app called Anki. It’s a free app where you can create a question answer by yourself and use it to revise while you take a coffee break or while listening to music.

6. Make mnemonics

Another great way of remembering things is by making mnemonics. It is especially useful when you have to remember different points. For example there will be a question in pediatrics about management of cyanotic spells and you need to know all the points. For that you will have to make mnemonics, otherwise its sure that you will forget some point as you have never managed such case. There are multiple apps and websites available. One of them is RXPGONLINE. But it is best when you make your own and the mnemonics is related to the topic for which you are creating them. It helps.

7. Practice clinical examinations

I used to think I am good at doing clinical examinations until I practiced in real patients. I will give you an example. I studied neurological examination form different books and was confident. We usually practice clinical examination on our friends who is normal and cooperative. But it is really difficult to assess real patients. When I started examining a case of Stroke in neuromedicine ward, it was all mess. The patient will not comprehend you most of the times. Sometimes they cannot speak. There might be a language barrier.  You cannot give command to semiconscious patient to lift their leg to assess power. So circumstances are different between examining normal friends and real patients. So I would suggest you to practice clinical examination on real patients too.
